anise

Smells exactly like black licorice or a glass of pastis: sweet, cool, and slightly medicinal. Anise has a strange dual nature: gourmand and herbal at the same time. Used sparingly, it adds a chilled, mysterious quality to the heart of a fragrance. Lolita Lempicka built an entire fragrance around it. Pairs well with lavender, vanilla, and tobacco. A little goes a long way: too much and the whole thing smells like cough syrup.

Also known as: star anise, aniseed, pastis accord
