birch tar
Smoky, leathery, slightly medicinal: the smell of a campfire and an old saddle at once. Birch tar is the foundation of most "leather" accords in classic perfumery (Cuir de Russie, Knize Ten). A few drops add a smoldering, dark edge to compositions; too much and it reads as creosote.
