pine

The sharp, resinous bite of a fresh-cracked pine cone or crushed needles underfoot. Pine is greener and more nostalgic than cedar, less smoky than fir, and unmistakably outdoorsy. It can lean toward cleaning-product territory if overdone (it's the smell of classic floor polish), so most modern fragrances use it sparingly for lift in the opening. Pairs well with citrus, juniper, and vetiver. A short-lived top-to-heart note.

Also known as: pine needle, scotch pine, pine resin
